Mini Mermaid Running Club UK Receives Grant to Support Children and Young People
LEEDS 11 May 2022 - Mini Mermaid Running Club UK (MMRC UK) is thrilled to announce the receipt of grant from Sport England and the Nation Lottery, to support children’s physical activity and wellbeing, particularly as our communities rebuild after Covid-19. MMRC UK combine movement and mindfulness activities to help girls with their confidence and self-worth, unpinned by physical activity.
According to Sport England, the funding “is designed to incentivise the renewal of sport and physical activity and reduce the overall impact Covid-19 has on our sector and wider partners. It aims to motivate sport and physical activity to rebuild in an innovative and inclusive way, with the needs of priority audiences as an essential component of the way sport and physical activity is offered.”
MMRC UK will use the grant to provide 30 funded programmes for schools and communities across the UK, as well as update the programme curriculum to reflect the experiences and challenges primary-aged girls face today.
Even before Covid-19, reports from Youth Sports Trust and Sport England showed that 96% of girls do not take part in any physical activity by the age of 14. Among 7-11 years old, girls cite a lack of confidence as a key factor, with their confidence peaking at 9 years of age.
To help disrupt these declines, MMRC UK offer a timely, relevant preventative programme that counters these trends. The multi-week curriculum includes group discussion, journal work, games and workouts, all while training for a 5km challenge.
More than 3,000 children have completed Mini Mermaid programmes in schools and community centres across the UK. Outcomes of Mini Mermaids include:
